I’ve always followed the work of the renowned Japanese architect with huge respect and so it was very special to have him involved in my Chelsea garden of 2011, for which he created “Wind”, a transparent bamboo pavilion. The delicacy of the materials and the immaculately considered detailing meant that with even the slightest breeze, however gentle, parts of the pavilion would move, just like a flower or a tree. It was a sensory, almost acoustic experience that also provided an intimate connection with the garden.

Working with Kuma, I was inspired to look again at the simplest materials and details – however seemingly humble or insignificant – in a very different light, for that is his genius.
