Luciano Giubbilei Studio — Bergamo

Bergamo

Bergamo, Italy

2019

For the ninth edition of the major Italian landscape event “I Maestri del Pasesaggio”, Luciano was invited to reimagine the public square of the Piazza Vecchia in Bergamo.

The temporary installation, spanning eighteen days, saw a delicate intervention of both green and hardscape elements, to the historic square. The composition traversed the relationship between architecture and the natural environment, with reference to the beautiful way in which vegetation can spontaneously re-appropriate man-made spaces, if given the opportunity.

Soft canopies of multi-stemmed trees were set amidst organic islands of planting, bringing an everchanging play of light to the architecture of the square. Offset with rough stone slabs, which encouraged a tactile interaction, the installation sought to rewrite the atmosphere of the familiar city square. A dialogue resulted, where landscape and the urban connected seamlessly to create a new narrative, posing the question of whether there might be alternative ways to bring green life to our cities.
