Casa Newton
Tuscany, Italy
2020–2024
The garden at Casa Newton largely emerged from a blank canvas, as little remained of its original form. At its heart, a formal parterre is the only area that seeks to evoke what might once have existed. Using fragments of restored stone paths as a guide, the space was reimagined as a classical Italian garden, inspired by nearby examples at the Horti Leonini in San Quirico d’Orcia and at La Foce. The restored paths, carefully preserved, guide visitors through the garden, anchored by a reclaimed fountain whose soft sound animates the stillness.
A wisteria-covered tunnel creates a shaded retreat, framing distant views across the vineyards and toward Monte Amiata. Beyond the symmetry and order of this formal composition, the garden transitions to a more natural rhythm — a sequence of loosely connected spaces that unfold gradually, inviting exploration and a sense of quiet discovery.
An arrival garden welcomes guests to the villa, while a rosemary-scented path links the main building to the pool and surrounding annexes. As visitors move through these spaces, glimpses of the wider valley appear, each view carefully revealed to heighten the sense of openness and calm.
A terraced vegetable garden, oriented to the south, completes the composition. Both productive and ornamental, it reflects the seasonal life of the estate, its harvest gathered for use in the kitchen, bringing the landscape’s abundance directly to the table.
