Raby Castle
County Durham, England
2018–2024
In 2018 the studio was invited to reimagine the Walled Garden at Raby Castle, with the aim of reflecting its rich history, to create an environment charged with atmosphere and a renewed sense of place and purpose.
Lying on a gentle, southwards-facing slope, north of the castle, the existing Walled Garden is compartmentalised into three distinct spaces, each with its own uses and characteristics. In conjunction with surviving iconic features – including the yew hedges and Raby fig – and listed structures, this configuration underlies a new tripartite vision, comprising a productive garden, a formal garden and a pleasure garden. A series of framed views between the different territories of the garden, the castle and the surrounding landscape becomes the means to articulate the dynamic nature of the overall composition.
